The Wanderer

from The Sleepy Hollow Years by Sleepy Hollow

/

about

Since I was having trouble getting the band to learn my more elaborate pieces (see tracks 1-3), I decided to write an acoustic epic I could play on my own. The band ended up liking it, and we played it out with the original lineup, although it didn't get recorded until the later Legend album. I almost recorded it for my Lost Way solo CD, but Joe's elaborate pipe organ part seemed to make it more of a Sleepy Hollow song. Some nice percussion from Gary Rinaldi on this, also!

Lyrically, it's meant to be evocative. It's inspired by various legends of those cursed to wander for eternity (the Wandering Jew, the Flying Dutchman, the Soldier and Death episode of the Storyteller TV show, etc.). Interestingly enough, my vocal teacher Dari Franks heard it as being about a vampire.

lyrics

You speak ill of men
Say that they're all pigs
Yet to kindly ones
Won't give the time of day

You call women whores
Give them no respect
Especially the ones
You can't get in your bed

chorus:
The side of life you see
Can be what you seek out
The world is evil -
Could it all be just because
You avoid the good?

Have you ever thought
How you see the world
Your opinions,
Could it be that they reflect
On yourself most of all?

You hate the white man
Won't listen to his lies
You know that they all
Think you're all the same

You say immigrants
Just care for their own kind
You would protect the "true
Americans" from them

chorus:
The side of life you see
Can be what you seek out
The world is evil -
Could it all be just because
You avoid the good?

Have you ever thought
How you see the world
Your opinions,
Could it be that they reflect
On yourself most of all?
